Commonly Used Acronyms
(otherwise know as those annoying alphabetical abbreviations)
To paraphrase a very wise member of our congregation, acronyms have their place, but please don't use them when real words work. And if you must use an acronym, please explain its meaning at the beginning of any writing or conversation.

CAD - computer-aided design
DOS - disk operating system
FAQ - frequently asked questions
HDTV - high definition television
LAN - local area network
WI-FI - Wireless Fidelity
Medical:
CBC - complete blood count
CXR - chest x-ray
FB - foreign body
ICU - intensive care unit
UTI - urinary tract infection
General:
4WD - four wheel drive
AARP - American Association of Retired Persons
ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act
AUCE - all you can eat
HVAC - heating ventilation air conditioning
HOV - high occupancy vehicle
MOD - March of Dimes
NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
NCUA - National Credit Union Association
SOP - standard operating procedures
WWW - World Wide Web
